Equine Industry a Leading Sector in Central Kentucky
Our irreplaceable Bluegrass assets–the prime soils and farmland that surround Lexington–significantly impact not only our quality of life, but serve as an important economic engine in our community. Research shows that in Fayette County alone, agriculture has a $2.3 billion economic impact. In addition, 1 in 12 jobs in Fayette County are supported by agriculture.
The Lane Report’s article on the impact of the equine industry in Central Kentucky, to the tune of a $3.4 billion annually, discusses the various ways this sector affects both our economy and Bluegrass identity.
From The Lane Report October 10, 2019 article, titled “CKY Market Review: An economic force and a way of life”:
There are more than 400 horse farms in Central Kentucky, and more than 1,100 “equine operations” in Fayette County alone, according to the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey.
More money changes hands over the sale of horses in Lexington than any place in the world.
