Fifteen years ago, Fayette Alliance launched what would become a cornerstone of our advocacy, education, and research strategy: Grow Smart Academy.

In a city defined by its world-renowned farmland, historic neighborhoods, and vibrant economy, the need for well-informed, community-driven leadership has never been greater.

That’s why, since 2010, Grow Smart Academy has provided free, high-impact education to hundreds of Lexingtonians — transforming residents into advocates, and advocates into changemakers.

2025 marks a landmark year for this flagship program. As we celebrate its 15th anniversary, we also recommit to the bold idea that smart growth begins with smart citizens.

Over the past 15 years, Grow Smart Academy has grown into one of Lexington’s most trusted civic education programs, rooted in data, powered by people, and focused on the future. And we’re just getting started.

In today’s political landscape, local decisions matter more than ever—from zoning and housing policy to infrastructure, environmental planning, and farmland protection.

Yet many of these critical choices are made by a small number of elected officials and advisory bodies.
