Cobra Farm

Cobra Farm

Cobra Farm is owned by Gary and Betty Biszantz; they purchased the original 82 acre farm 12 years ago and now have 340 acres after buying two adjoining farms. This is a Thoroughbred operation that is home to approximately 80 horses and 20 employees year round. The Biszantz’s are from southern California and spend approximately 50 percent of their time on the farm. Mr. Biszantz has been in the Thoroughbred racing business for over 50 years and has amassed an amazing record of nearly 20 percent wins and 50 percent of being “in the money” with his race horses. And yes, he was the owner, then Chairman of the Board, of Cobra Golf Manufacturing for 20 years prior to selling the company 12 years ago, hence the name and logo.

Cobra Farm is the birthplace of Seattle Slew, the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winner of 1974. Cobra was also the home of Dehere, the 1994 Champion Two Year old colt, as well as Strategic Maneuver, a Multiple G1 winning 2 year old filly, also in 1994. In 2003 Sinister Minister was foaled on Cobra Farm, becoming the G1 Bluegrass Stakes winner and Kentucky Derby runner, who is now standing stud in Japan. Other Cobra Farm horses have included Multiple G2 winner and Ky Derby runner Old Trieste that stood stud at the former Jonabell Farm, Cobra King who stood at Gainesway Farm, and most recently was the breeder of Graded Stakes runners Forefathers and Spin Master.

Mr. and Mrs. Biszantz enjoy the rural setting of the farm, the heritage that surrounds the farm and Lexington-Fayette County, and being in the center of the “Horse Capital of the World”. Four years ago, the Biszantzs placed an easement on the farm with the LFUCG Purchase of Development Rights program. Under the easement, the farm will never be developed, thereby protecting Lexington’s status as the “Horse Capital of the World”.

Enjoy your visit to Cobra Farm and we hope one of the foals you see playing in the paddocks will be the Kentucky Derby winner in 2011.
